Chimney Flashing

Flashing is one of the most common problems we see. Improper installation, deterioration and even a lack of installation are regular finds.

Here we can see a questionable installation of a diverter flashing above the chimney. This was supposed to prevent further leakage at the base of the chimney.

A handyman was hired to correct the issue. Flashing was surface mounted with screws through the siding of the chimney and through the shingles, causing more damage to the house. The metal was then sealed at the top edge in an effort to stop any leakage. This “fix” is temporary and will deteriorate in a few years, creating an on-going maintenance issue.

After refusing this as a repair, a licensed roofer was called to correct the attempt. The metal was removed, the damaged siding and shingles were removed and the true problem was revealed. There was no permanent flashing installed at the base of the chimney, only house wrap or a vapor barrier.

The correct repair of metal flashing installed with underlayment was performed.

New siding and shingles were properly installed, correctly repairing the leak at the chimney.

The result is an affective repair with a more appealing appearance. It pays to hire competent individuals who perform in a professional manner.
